Rules for Better Driving

Rule #13: Create Space--Use the "Two-Second-Plus Rule"
Guard your safety by actively creating space around your vehicle, never allowing yourself to get "boxed in." Adequate space creates time and helps you avoid collisions. Maintain at LEAST two seconds of driving distance, more if you can.

Many of us learned the "Two Second Rule" in our driver's ed class, and it's a great rule for driving. But it's deadly when it comes to following Jesus.
In Luke 22:54, Peter makes the mistake of his life.
"Then seizing Him, they led Him away and took Him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance."
Sadly, most of us at times do the same thing. We don't want to get "boxed in." We try to "create space"--space in our friendships, space in our marriages, space from our church, and even space from the Lord.
But you see, in the Christian life, it's never about how far we can go. It's about how close we can get.

I sometimes get caught up in the fact that I need to be careful not to get kicked out of the country, so I create this space by thinking I don't need to share about Jesus. I'll just keep with my work rescuing the children and my other responsibilities and I can leave it up to the church here to talk about Jesus. What? Jesus is the Truth, the living Word, and the word does not go void. I should count it a privilege to face opposition at the name of Jesus. (i don't mean i'm going to try to get myself kicked out... any time soon ;) kidding kidding.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, getting caught up in what I'm doing instead of why I'm doing it is so easy to do. I'm glad He's always there to remind us that without being rooted in Him nothing else we do will matter.

There are so many things that keep me that two seconds away...the door bell, a phone call, the urgency to clean or teach or serve or... sometimes I have come to believe that I am selfish by resting on the couch and simply reading His Word to me. Praise God that He wants me to cuddle, to quiet my soul like a weaned child that rests against his mother. How can a Consuming Fire want distance from me? That is not consuming. Does the Potter leave the wheel spinning with the clay on? Do I want my kids at a safe distance as we cross the street or walk in a store? Why, because I want to keep them safe, I look for dangers that they are unaware of. Does God have that same desire? Does He really ache to protect me? Does He truely know of things that I am oblivious to? Is it really safer to walk close with Him even though He is hated and people want to kill Him? How do I walk with a God who is targeted? Oh, the story does not end there. He is victorious over sin and death. They have no sting. Let me hug the King of Kings. Let me hold hands with the Lord of Lords. Let me hide in the shadow of His wings. May I know that He is Almighty.
